first night in Chiang Mai

We arrived at the airport and a taxi driver was nice enough to allow us to use his cell phone to call our hotel. They sent a driver who arrived about 15 minutes later. His name was Rambo and coincidentally was going to be our tour guide for our trekking expedition this weekend...

He took us to the Holiday Garden View Guesthouse which was a really cute little place with all wooden tables and chairs in thier open-air lobby. They also had a little pond and waterfall there along with a pool table and small cafe. We got to our tiny room and dumped our stuff so we could run off to the night market.

The night bazaar in Chiang Mai is one of the main attractions of this area...over 8000 stalls are set up selling anything and everything you can think of. It is truly a shoppers paradise and even though I swore I wasn't going to buy stuff this time around, I couldn't help myself...

We had red and green Thai curry for dinner and got a free show of Thai traditional dancing right there in the middle of the market. We stopped in an internet cafe and were surprised to run into Paul, one of the other girls' friends who they were planning to meet up here. He overheard us talking in the cafe and mentioned that he had been hanging out with them during the day...they had flown to Chiang Mai that morning and we basically hadn't seen them since Cambodia. We were hoping to catch back up again, but it's been difficult to coordinate plans via email while traveling...

Anyway, shortly thereafter we headed back to our hotel...it was a pretty simple room and Chiang Mai was already seemingly colder than Bangkok. It was freezing that night...a nice preview for what was to come on our trekking expedition...
